If you hired a lawyer for your immigration case, but they’re no longer helping you, learn what you can do now to protect yourself.

1. Fast facts

If your relationship with an immigration lawyer ends before your case is over, your immigration case will still move forward.  Unless immigration agencies or immigration court know the lawyer no longer represents you, they may keep sending important notices to the lawyer or law firm. If you don’t get these notices, you could miss important deadlines or other case updates.  To protect yourself and your immigration options, you should monitor your case regularly and learn how to check its status yourself.

Try to talk to another immigration lawyer as soon as possible. Even if you can’t hire a lawyer for the whole case, a paid first meeting may help you understand your choices and next steps. You can also take other steps on your own to make a safety plan and change your address, among other options.
